This is a very nice 1824 Anne Davidson School Girl House Sampler from Gargunnock Scotland with Provenance. The sampler was done in naturally dyed cotton or silk on hand spun and handwoven linen, and measures (including the frame) 19 3/4 inch long and 11 3/4 inch wide. The interior sampler measurements of just the sampler are 17 X 9 inches. This sampler is from the late Barbara Lewis estate which was located here in Western Massachusetts. There are two sets of alphabets, one set of numbers to 25, a whole series of initials, a crown, a multi-floor house (a little bit of wool used in the embroidery), stylized floral and fauna, and is signed Anne Davidson/Gargunnock (Stirling, Scotland)1824.
In doing a little research on Gargunnock, it is a small picturesque community where it is believed to have had William Wallace and Bonnie Prince Charlie pass through the village. There are no holes, rips or tears and appropriate aging to the linen. It is in a very old frame mounted on wood perhaps the frame dating to C1900 or so. Nothing has been done to the sampler since then and is in original condition. In doing a little research on Anne herself, Family Search has her christening date at 31 October 1813 so she would have been 11 years old when she embroidered the sampler. Also her fathers name was Alexander Davidson and mothers name Christian Simson. There is a Clan Davidson Society in the US. and Clan Davidson is one of the Great Scottish Highland clans with roots back to the 13th Century. Google and Wikipedia have a good articles on Clan Davidson.
