This is a 19thC Black Cloth Rag Doll in Original Red Calico Dress Embroidered Features 23 Inches New York State Origin. This 23-inch black cloth doll has a black cotton sateen body jointed/stitched at the hips, knees, elbows, and shoulders. She has great mitt hands with opposing thumb (some wear to the hands), comma-shaped feet, fairly dense cotton batting stuffing, hand and treadle machine stitched, black caracul cloth wig, repair stitching to vertical dart under her mouth/chin area to a seam already there, stitched embroidered features (with some wear), and some stitched repairs to shoulders. Her head and long upper torso consist of a single piece of fabric, while her stomach and hips are another piece of fabric generously stuffed. This wonderful doll has an embroidered mouth with teeth and is missing her eyebrows. The vertical stitching at her chin is a construction neck dart to give her head and neck shape. There has been some additional stitching there. She is wearing her original hand-stitched red calico dress (black dolls look fabulous dressed in red). The sleeves have much wear from age and someone has spent some time stitching them. The cotton dress itself is wonderful with lined cotton bodice, cartridge pleating, early hooks and eyes, piping, and growth pleats (faded to that nice soft red color). She is also wearing a lace-trimmed white cotton half-slip petticoat. She has good proportions and presence and is a great doll.
