This is a Mammy Cloth Rag Bottle Doll Holding Baby 1930s Black Americana Folk Art 14 Inch. Bottle dolls were made during the 1930s as doorstops. These unique and one of a kind dolls were often made of black stockings (usually faded to brown through the years) and a bottle filled with sand or something heavy as the base. Very often they had embroidered faces and other charming details showing off the makers creativity. This 14 inch doll is a nice example with embroidered mouth, button eyes and holding a baby also with an embroidered face. The head and base were made from an old stocking while the clothing is red calico with a white dimity apron. There is wear to the cotton stuffed fabric arms and the baby’s white organdy dress. There is a hole to the side of the head. The bottle is filled with sand and is heavy.
