This is a Shaker Sewing Roll Up Needles Thread Pins Bronzed Leather Red Silk Lining. The United Society of Believers were a primarily 19th century religious society that became known as "the Shakers" because of the trembling and shaking of the members during prayer. Among other things, they produced many many sewing items to be sold to the outside world. The Shakers made these to sell to the public along with all the different textiles, seeds, woodenware, furniture, and tinware etc. The roll up is lined with red silk taffeta (some light foxing to the fabric consistent with age). The tubular thread holder is firm to house the spools of thread and to be the base for the roll. There is a place to insert embroidery thread, a pocket, and a flap that is the needle book (the two pages are cream color wool with blanket stitch embroidered binding). The leather shows wear consistent with the age. It measures 6 1/6 inches long and 6 inches around. Years ago, it was a lot easier to find these little gems, but no so easy anymore. A basic piece for a good sewing collection. I have reason to believe this is a museum deaccession.
