This is a David Andersen Sterling Silver Vintage SAGA Brooch. It is a Viking Design Copy C1960's. The Original brooch was made about 1000AD. It shows a large animal surrounded by the entwining coils of a serpent and represents the struggles between the powers of good and evil. It was found at Eidanger, Telemark. David Andersen SAGA jewelry comprises replicas of original pieces most of them at present in the Historical Museum in Oslo, Norway. The originals were fashioned some time between 300-1000 AD. The unique ornaments testify to a profound artistry and have highly developed decorative effect. Among the old Norsemen, precious metals were highly prized and the goldsmiths of the Viking Age were often masters at their craft. The SAGA pieces have an irresistible appeal to people of the machine age not only for their antique qualities but above all for their imaginative composition and exquisite workmanship. The condition is excellent. This Viking copy is marked Original from Viking Period 1000AD/ D.A. Sterling Norway 925S Copy. It measures 1 5/8" wide and 1 5/8" long. The weight is 9.7 grams. The design and work are exquisite and the condition is excellent.
