A stunning Victorian English games box made from Walnut with cantered edges having been ebonised.
The box is smothered with gilded bronze fittings still retaining the original gilded finish. The centre incorporates a fan of three playing cards. The top is also decorated with four large polished cabochon Onyx stones.
The box comes complete with a working key; once opened the original blue silk lining is revealed. There are five compartments, four containing four (later) packs of playing cards, two wooden whist markers and two leather Bezique markers; the central long compartment contains a selection of counters.
Dating to around 1860, this is highly decorative box in excellent condition. 10" x 7" x 3 1/4".
