Always sought-after and harder to find these days, this is a genuine antique German novelty counter bell in the from of a tortoise. This one is certainly a rare example, most of the "shells" are made from polished metal, this one is actually a real shell.
The bell is mechanical and and when wound up from the underside will give out an authoritative shrill when either the tail or head is pressed. Unmarked, these were usually German made.
He is lucky enough to retain his two original glass eyes.
Dating to around 1900 it remains in full working order and in excellent polished condition measuring 6 3/4" x 3 3/4" x 2 1/4" tall.
