A wonderful find and a rare find at that. This Victorian novelty box was skilfully made from section s of English oak, carved to perfection to create this bell shape. The fittings are all made in silver plate and have the benefit of a English deisgn registration diamond shaped lonzenge to the top, always highly sought-after by collectors. This one allows us to date the design registration to 8th February 1857.
The push button to the front is used to open the lid revealing the original zinc liner within. I believe this is probably a Tobacco box but could equally have been a tea caddy. A real gem in superb undamaged condition.
The base measures 6 1/2" in diameter and stands 7" tall.
