A very showy and grand desk standish made from the magical combination of Tortoise shell inlaid with cut brass creating this highly desirable look.
The stand is of swept oblong form mounted with two cut crystal inkwells (one tiny rough spot to the underside of one, mentioned purely for accuracy) crowned with hinged covers.
Between the inkwells, there is a lidded box which would have been used to keep pen nibs, sealing wax and similar desk-top accouterments. The stand is supported by four wonderfully decorative cast brass feet.
I think probably French in origin rather than English and dating to the early nineteenth century, around 1830. A good size, measuring 14" x 8".
