In all the years I have dealt in antique boxes, I have never come across anything quite like this. The box is made from Rosewood and clearly custom made for a family to display intricate hair samples of family members.
The underside is covered in fabric to lay on a table top but was also fitted with a metallic ring to have the case on the wall. The box opens to reveal a glazed door fitted with a catch allowing it to be opened.
Samples of hair are beautifully displayed with intricate woven ribbons of hair and gold or gold plated momograms F M, E E M, M J A and the ribbon and bow at the bottom is engraved Dec 15th 1811, Aged 41, presumably a keepsake.
Alas no key to this most collectible of boxes; an heirloom addition to any collection. 9" x 7" x 2 1/2".
