A wonderful table-top letter box made from solid English Oak mounted with a thick brass plate to the sloped top, with the red enamelled letters V R either side of a crown for Victoria Regina (Queen Victoria).
These boxes were for the collection of mail in grand hotels, private clubs and the homes of the aristocracy where a member of staff would collect the mail and take to the post, very civilized! The glass window at the bottom was for the staff to see if there was mail to be collected.
Excellent condition dating to the Victorian era, around 1890. Excellent condition with a footprint measuring 9" x 7" and stands 13 1/2" high. Complete with working tasseled key.
