A really fabulous example of an Answered and Unanswered Letter or Correspondence box dating to around 1860, made from Burr Walnut smothered in top-notch brass fittings including a carrying handle.
The domed lid has two slots in the top, one for "Answered" letter and one for "Unanswered" letters each labelled with beautifully engraved mounts.
The box opens to reveal a silk taffeta lining with a central divider. The slips or sides are trimmed in exotic Coromandel wood with the original engraved makers plate inlaid to the back "James Howell & Co., Regent St. London" - a top notch retailer.
One of the finest I have had in some time and in excellent condition. 7 3/4" x 4 1/2" x 6 1/2" tall excluding handle.
