A rarely found piece of Boulle (Tortoise Shell Intricately inlaid with cut brass, then brightly polished), this wonderful paper tray is a really handsome addition to the smartest of desk tops, perfect furnished with smart personalized stationery. Purchased as part of an entire desk set. I had to purchase each piece individually so am selling as individual items. All other pieces signed but this piece not.
The tortoiseshell was attached to the hardwood frame with coloured matter below (in this case red) to give this highly sought after reddish-orange colouring to these works of art. This process first developed by the French cabinetmaker, André-Charles Boulle (11 November 1642 – 28 February 1732, highly popular in nineteenth century Britain.
