Russian late twentieth century lacquer box, 6" by 4" by 1 5/8" high, with signature (I believe) in Russian, and also a title, in Russian, at lower left. It's a great image, with mounted medieval horseman, an orthodox church in the distance, and a figure like Old Man Winter blowing at the horseman. Colors are delicate and pleasing. I've been using this as a trinket holder on my night table. Condition is excellent, with some irregular surface inside in the red, and the bottom side surface is lightly scratched, though the photo overstates the surface wear. There is a long tradition of Russian lacquered boxes, some of which sell for thousands of dollars, but I cannot claim to know much about the subject! A Russian-speaking friend tells me that the inscription at left says "fight of Russlana with head". (!!!)
