This 6 1/4" by 10" ink drawing on paper (11 1/2" by 13 3/4" as framed) is titled at lower left "Garden of Sounds" and is signed at lower right "STANDISH" and dated "52" I believe. It's a subtle work that doesn't take well to being photographed, (and I've had to enhance--darken--the photos a bit to make it easier to appreciate on a screen) but, viewed in person, it is quite an impressive and delicate work that reminds one somewhat of some of the drawings by Paul Klee. There are incredibly complicated maze-like swirls and patterns that, up close, are very impressive. It took a truly talented artist to create this delicate modern drawing. I feel it might well be a work of the listed California watercolor artist STANDISH BACKUS (1910-1989) but this might well require more research. Condition is excellent with only slight mat browning at the very edges, and "$25" written in pencil in the extreme lower right margin might be the original price charged by the artist. .
