Gouache on paper laid on board extensive landscape in the naive style, signed at left "Yehoshua" (YEHOSHUA BRANDSTATTER (1891-1975). For the collector of Judaica and Jewish painting, this is a charming work by a noted figure in Israel, a man who did not take up painting until age 72. He immigrated to Israel in 1909 and was active in the Israeli film industry until his senior years. In 1966 the prestigious Grosvenor Gallery in London held a one man exhibition of his works; other one man shows were held in the U.S., Israel, and Europe. In 1982 a hard cover heavily illustrated book on his work was published. CONDITION: this work was exposed to moisture at some time in its life. The paper is laid on a board which has become warped and brittle. A framer unfortunately used a framing method which made this very difficult to remove from the frame, and in the process of removing it, an 8" thin vertical crack appeared from the top edge to the tree. This can be repaired I am sure, but removing a strip of wood from the backing board could be difficult. Contact me for more details and images. .
