A rare modernist style still life painting in gouache on paper, 19" by 25" (27 1/2" by 33 1/4" as framed), signed at lower left and dated Paris 1954, by the noted Spanish woman artist MARIA SANMARTI (1886-1959). The striking work features some naivety, but also, some tie to the work of Henri Matisse. The artist, the mother of Spanish 20th century master Antoni Clave (1913-2005), (his top auction price over $700,000) did not begin to explore her own artistic talents until near the end of her life, in 1947, when she was encouraged by her son. She quickly began to exhibit all around Europe, and a number of lithographs were made from the originals. Sanmarti seems to be rather lost to art history, but her talent is obvious. This is a fine mid century work with plenty of modernist spark and style. Condition is excellent. See labels from Pasquale Iannetti Galleries in San Francisco, and an old Butterfields auction label, affixed to the backing paper.
