Offered together as a pair, as they were acquired, small oil paintings of landscapes of Australia, by listed artist BERTRAM BRYNING (1875-1960). One, an oil on board featuring a dock and hilly shoreline, 10" by 13 1/2", plus a thin strip frame, is titled on the reverse "At the Pittwater NSW./Bertram Bryning 1949; the other, 5 1/2" square, plus gold framing, is a scene of a peaceful creek or backwater, a small boat pulled up on the shore among the greenery; it is titled "At Fairfield" on the frame, and is signed there by the artist (though, not apparently on the painting itself). The Pittwater River is just north of Sydney, and is a boater and fisherman's paradise; Fairfield is a far western Sydney suburb. There seems to be little biographical information on this talented artist from Down Under. A better frame would really bring out the larger piece.
