A very early watercolor landscape of a thicket and meadow at sunset, signed at lower left corner and dated there 1887 by the noted Indiana artist JOHN ELWOOD BUNDY (1853-1933). The work, 5" by 8" (11 1/4" by 14 1/2" in frame) bears many color notations on the reverse, likely in the artist's handwriting, giving us some insight into the creative process. The scene is very peaceful and calming, showing us day's end. Bundy was born in North Carolina and came with family to Indiana as a boy of 5. Mostly self-taught, he did study for a tie with Indiana painter Barton S. Hays. Bundy also spent some time in New York painting portraits and becoming involved with photography.. By 1887 he was teaching at the art department of Earlham College in Indiana, and by 1895 he considered himself a full time artist. Later in life he did travel to California and Michigan on brief trips. Bundy is considered to have influenced the founding of the Richmond Art Museum in his beloved Indiana. He died in Cincinnati in 1933. The present work thought presently in a frame will need to be reframed, as the present one is very worn. See photos of the reverse side of the sheet.
