An example of the 1976 poster for the Pasadena Art Center College of Design exhibition of the works of then-already famous American fashion and portrait photographer RICHARD AVEDON (1923-2004), measuring 26 1/4" by 19 1/2", unframed. The stark black and white imagery features photos of artist Willem de Kooning at his Long Island studio (1969) and dancer John Martin (1975). Avedon hand-signed in marker with his typical sweeping, dramatic signature, at lower center. The work was found unframed, in a Pasadena estate. Being unframed, it fell victim to some abuse, there being an arc-shaped 4 1/2" tear from right margin inwards, in the area of Martin's shoulder/dress top. Also there is a dig in the paper at lower right, a brown stain at extreme bottom edge, and handling creases at right edge and top. Some matting would hide much of the edge issues; the tear could likely be minimized with careful taping on the reverse side. From normal viewing distance this might then be not that noticeable.
Avedon's obituary published in The New York Times said that "his fashion and portrait photographs helped define America's image of style, beauty and culture for the last half-century". By the 1940's he was already doing commercial advertising work and by late in the decade was actively branching out creatively. By 1962 he was the lead photographer at Vogue, having made connections with many well-placed people. From then on to the end of his life, there was fame and recognition, he photographing many famous people and forging relationships with them. Avedon was working an assignment in San Antonio, Texas when he died suddenly of a cerebral hemorrhage. See any number of detailed obituaries of the photographer. His enormous, iconic black and white photo Dovima with elephants, Evening dress by Dior, Cirque d'Hiver, Paris, 1955, hammered for $945,000 at a Christie's Paris auction in 2010. Avedon photographed the famous and not-so-famous for decades.
A small poster issued in 1976 to publicize an exhibition of the works of fashion and portrait photographer RICHARD AVEDON (1923-2004) held at the Pasadena Art Center College of Design in Southern California. The unframed sheet measures 26" by 19 1/2". The photographer hand signed it in pencil in his typical sweeping hand. Subjects of the poster are, at left, artist Willem de Kooning in 1969 at his Long Island studio, and, at right, dancer John Martin, photographed in 1975. Having traveled unframed, the poster has unfortunately reflects the consequences of rough handling, there being a 4 1/2" roughly horizontal, arched tear extending in from the right edge, a small dig at lower right center, some creasing of top edge, etc. The tear could be minimized if properly taped on reverse side. Shipping will be in a sturdy tube for economy.
