Pastel on paper laid on thin card, 12 3/8" by 10 3/8" (15" by 13" in old wood frame), the subject flowers in a vase, rendered in a bright colors in a modernist style, signed at lower left corner by Czech artist JAROSLAV GRUS (1891-1981). The work likely dates to the 1950's I would think, a time when Communism was the law of the land in that part of post-war Europe. The artist received training at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague and during the second half of the 1920's, traveled through much of western Europe, absorbing what he saw. Later in life he became an active member of the Communist Party, and in the post-war years, much of his work toed the party line, dealing with industrial and other approved subject matter. Grus' works appear often at auction in the Czech Republic. This is in excellent condition, with just small edge irregularities from framing nails.
