An oil on canvas, 16" by 20 1/2", 20" by 24" in goldish decorative complementary framing, unsigned on front, but on reverse are characters in Japanese, giving the name of the artist and "Tokyo", the work featuring violet-white flowers in a decorative vase set on a cloth of complex design. I have written to two Japanese auction houses and they kindly informed me that the artist name appears to be "Kawame", possibly Teiji Kawame, who was a student of Tokyo University of the Arts under Kuroda Seiki (1866-1924, which would fit date-wise), but the auction house is not certain about this attribution. This work belonged to a local Los Angeles family, who said that the piece was owned by a relative who was a pilot for Japan Airlines at mid century. There is a pre-zip code Denver art shop label affixed to stretcher. The work appears to me to date from circa 1935 to about 1960. Condition is excellent. Overall, a stunningly executed, high quality still life.
