A small painting, oil on canvas laid on board, (7 1/2" by 9 1/2", and 11 1/2" by 13 1/2" as framed, signed lower right, and titled on the reverse backing paper "Indiana Sand Dunes", by listed Indiana artist GLENN F. BASTIAN (1890-1966). The painting features a couple of straggly pines that have managed to survive in the harsh shifting dunes environment. The lake waters are seen in the distance. Bastian was born in Fort Seneca, Ohio and was in Indiana by about age 10. He tried many different jobs, mostly in Gas City and Gary, and evidently painted at his leisure. He also went to Mexico, collecting feathers there which he incorporated into his "bird paintings". Most known works, still life and landscape, were executed in the 1930's and 1940's. The present work probably dates to the forties I would think. A cleaning would be well worth the investment, in order to remove the years of surface grime. There is a small chip of missing paint to the left of the signature, as seen in photos.
