Stranded high and dry in sunny Southern California, and wanting very much to go home to the east coast: a very large (35" by 39" extreme dimensions) clipper ship diorama/shadowbox. There is no glass---probably long since missing. This has clear folky qualities, but shows its age, (circa 1890-1920?----there are no square nails, and the use of the "squiggly" type of horizontally-driven nail in the corners, of which photos attached, seems to hint of a later date rather than earlier(?) There are missing pieces of the intricate inlay work at top along the framing portion, and deteriorated thread lines in the wooden sails, etc. I am told that the scorched lower left corner was the result of a 1970's fire! So, this antique has clearly seen a lot of life. I see no writing nor hint as to the maker, though the letters at the top (something like "H S") of the framing portion may be initials. The piece is very heavy for its size.
