A rare example of a lithograph by noted Vietnam-born painter and sculptor VU CAO DAM (1908-2000). The print is pencil signed by the artist at lower right, dated there 1970, and numbered at lower left 38/150. Measurements are 26 3/4" by 21" inside the mat and 33 1/2" by 27" in gold metal frame. The artist was born in Hanoi, attending the Ecole des Beaux Arts de Indochine between 1926 and 1931. In 1932 he obtained a scholarship to further his studies as a sculptor in France. In later years, he became primarily a painter, the early works generally on silk, in deference to Chinese art. Later works are on canvas. The artist's prices have accelerated dramatically in the past 20 years, the oils formerly selling at auction generally in the under $5,000 range; now many sell well into five figures at major auctions, and I see a top price over $50,000. Other members of this "school" such as Le Pho and Mai Trung Thu have also brought ever-higher prices at auction. The print has not been examined out of the frame but appears to be in excellent condition. I see only six auction records for prints by Vu Cao Dam; most certainly they are not common.
