Original watercolor painting of Cape Cod's white dunes by the sea, highlighted by a perhaps short-lived sunbeam, as a darkening sky threatens a storm. This work is by noted American artist JAMES ARCHIBALD MITCHELL III (born 1932). Mitchell is known for marine art of coastlines and boats and ships, though he also painted classic New England barns. An original label on reverse shows the work was acquired from the prestigious Newbury Street, Boston gallery Doll & Richards. The firm formed in the 1860's and was active well into the 1970's, becoming one of the country's most venerable high-end galleries. Mitchell was born in Baltimore and educated at the Art Students League, studying under Frank Riley. The work measures 9" by 12 1/4" and 17" by 20" in silvery frame.
