American circa 1880 Hudson River School style painting on board, 9 1/2" by 13 1/2" (15" by 19" framed), apparently unsigned but clearly by a talented and probably listed artist, the subject a brook at the base of a small cliff in the forest. The work was purchased in Massachusetts and was framed previously in northern New Jersey. The frame has become brittle with age and pieces are missing, as shown. One can almost hear the trickle of the brook in this secluded and peaceful spot, the kind of wild place to which the Hudson River painters were attracted.
