A large oil on wood panel painting, 28 1/2" by 35 1/2" (37" by 44" framed) featuring a bird cage arranged in a modernist still life with other objects including a platter, several vases and a ceramic vessel, signed in red at lower left. On the reverse is an original printed label with hand written characters, and on the panel itself there is extensive writing again in characters. I originally thought the work Chinese but an auction house specialist found the painting to be actually of Japanese origin. The artist is apparently one Kazuo Shirotoshi, and possibly, so I am informed, "Jofuku" could be also part of the name. No listed artist can be found under any of these names. The work might date to the 1960's or 1970's. Condition is excellent. Gray-painted wood frame has a small dig or two.
