How best to describe this work? Let's try this: it is a delicate, rather poetic, unsigned pencil drawing on paper, 9 1/2" by 13 1/2" inside the present mat, 15" by 19" in silvery frame, the subject the famous buildings of Venice and its canals, complete with gondolas. Even though the work has age, at least 1950, or possibly even pre-war, the technique is decidedly modern. It could be a study for a later painting. The shading of the dome of the cathedral at upper right is quite interesting, and the gondolas, lightly sketched, seem to float on the water. As the drawing is so delicate, it is a bit difficult to show it to full advantage; I have increased the contrast in the photos so as to better show the fine draftsmanship. The drawing actually extends to the edges of the paper, beyond the present mat "window" opening.
