Offered is a large pastel drawing of late 19th century style coastal racing sailing craft near a buoy in a churning sea under a partly cloudy sky, signed at lower left "S E Wood 1897", the art itself measuring 16 1/4" by 27 1/4" (30" by 42" in mid 20th century scalloped wood frame). This resembles the east coast work of such artists as James Buttersworth, Fitz Hugh Lane, or Alfred Thompson Bricher but could conceivably be by a west coast artist named Sarah Elizabeth Wood, (1859-1924) of Contra Costa County near San Francisco. The drawing is executed by a talented hand. Unfortunately it has acquired some damage due to careless handling. There is a small edge tear extending about one inch in from right edge, and more significantly there is a torn, punched-through area at extreme lower left corner (but which happily did not involve the nearby signature and date). No doubt the issues could be repaired by professional paper restoration people. Shipping this with the glass not recommended.
