As suggested by the contradictory title "colorful vintage folk art painting....by Brazilian modernist", this is a very unusual, difficult-to-describe, interesting oil on canvas painting of Christ on the cross, the background a complex mix of bright primary color and modernist forms, signed at lower right by artist "Edelweiss". On the stretcher is written apparently in Portuguese, "Cobia alada da guita" or similar, along with the original $1520 USD price. The work measures 36" by 28 3/4" on the flimsy original stretchers, which have loosened to the point where the painting "moves" or wobbles if the stretcher is "turned". There are a number of repairable areas of paint loss or abrasion as well but they can be forgiven in a self-taught work, and they do not overwhelm the composition. I do not see a listed artist going by this name. The folk art qualities are obvious and the saturated color along with the modernist elements make for a very unusual piece. This should likely be re-stretched on a quality stretcher, but the information on the old one should be retained, if not the actual original stretcher itself.
