A superb gouache drawing of a Navajo rider and two horses in a red Southwest landscape, signed at lower right by the noted Navajo artist, JUSTIN TSO (1948-). The 11 5/8" by 10 1/4" drawing is double matted, (18" by 16 1/2" framed), the mat shape rather complex and interesting. Tso is known since the early 1980's for his stylized drawings of the Navajo people, their prized horses, and their unique dramatic landscape. Featured in Southwest Art Magazine as early as 1983, Tso has become a fixture on the art scene, taking over from where Harrison Begay and Beatien Yazz left off. Born and raised in Canyon de Chelly in northeastern Arizona, he has worked side jobs in electronics repair and leading tourist groups on horseback tours. Tso served in the military and attended various schools in the west, but is essentially a self-taught artist. This fine example of his work is in very fine, fresh condition. It is titled by the artist on the backing, "His Favorite Pony".
