Ink and wash on paper drawing, 14" by 9 3/4" inside the mat, 19 1/2" by 15 1/2" as framed (no glass), signed at lower right by American master artist JOHN EDWARD HELIKER (1909-1999). Heliker was a significant figure in American art of the twentieth century, working as an illustrator, and painting figures, florals, genre and interior scenes, landscapes and marines. At auction, works have exceeded $20,000. A student of Boardman Robinson, Kenneth Hayes Miller, Kimon Nicolaides, and Thomas Hart Benton, he began as a cubist but evolved towards a realist style. Heliker works are in 37 museum collections, including the most important American museums, and he is mentioned in 63 publications. He studied and taught at the Art Students League in New York, and taught at Columbia University and at Parson School of Design. In the graphic arts, Heliker experimented with lithography, principally in the 1960's. The work is clean and in excellent condition; there is a metal frame. From the collection of noted American music industry icon Seymour Stein of Los Angeles. A handwritten inscription on backing says "Pen + ink drawing by John E. Heliker 1909- from the artist collection Florenz Baron".
