Oil on canvas painting of a fetching young woman resting next to what appears to be a drum, 21" by 12" (24" by 14" in wood frame), signed at lower right and again on the reverse (both name and "Firenze"--Florence---) by Italian artist CIPRIANO CEI (1864-1922). The subject looks coyly at the viewer, as she takes a break in her day. An interesting wall of advertising posts at upper left adds interest. Cei was born near Venice and died in Rome. A pupil of Luigi Norfini, he came to be known for his amusing portraits of children and figures, somewhat in the way that J. G. Brown came to paint mischievous street children and shoeblack boys in New York. Cei's career peaked around 1900 when he exhibited at the Paris Salon. Cei's portrait of Pope Benedict XV hangs in the Vatican art gallery. This work is in good condition with the exception of a serpentine approximately 2" vertical tear near the top of the drum, and a smaller puncture at upper right. Both can be easily repaired.
