Vintage circa 1940 watercolor painting titled on reverse "Cambria Pines", signed at lower left center by well listed California artist BESSIE ELLA HAZEN (1862-1946). The 15" by 17" work (19 1/4" by 23" in old gold frame) is behind glass and in excellent fresh condition. Hazen was born in New Brunswick province in eastern Canada. By the mid 1890's she was in the northeastern US, in New York and Boston, and by 1906 found her way to Glendora in Southern California where she was a teacher. From the teens through the 1930's Hazen won prizes for her work at venues in Arizona and California. A member of the California Art Club, California Watercolor Society and Women Painters of the West, she made a significant contribution to California art. Most known works are landscapes. She worked in oil, watercolor and also the graphic arts. This example features a landscape in Cambria, a quiet, picturesque coastal town that is now a tourist draw on weekends, not far from the Hearst Castle at San Simeon, and south of the famous Big Sur coastline. A circa 1960's label on the reverse shows the address of Mr. and Mrs. C. Kenneth Hazen of Laguna Hills, California, perhaps a son of the artist. The old frame shows wear and losses.
