A vintage oil on canvas painting of blue cornflowers in a glass on a tabletop with a cut lemon, 14" by 10", unframed, signed at lower right "Igor", (IGOR PANTUHOFF 1911-1972). This is a classic work of the noted Big Eyed School master painter. Pantuhoff was born in Russia. He studied for a time with Hans Hoffmann, and is said to have lived with Lee Krasner for a time. A skilled portraitist who evidently moved easily in society circles, Pantuhoff by the 1960's turned to painting the Big Eye paintings of young girls, some nude. Of course the artist Margaret Keane painted this subject as well, and the art has struck a chord with today's younger generations. That popularity was further stoked by the movie on the subject, and Big Eye art became a Pop Culture phenomenon. The "Igor" paintings by Pantuhoff, be they of fetching young women or still life, are eagerly sought after, selling online and in live auctions as well. This example is in excellent condition. As a result of the publicity and the movie, there are convincing fakes now circulating in the market, but I unconditionally guarantee this one to be authentically by the hand of Igor Pantuhoff.
