A colorful 1970 exhibition poster featuring an image in primary colors of red, blue and yellow, signed in the image at right and dedicated in pencil by the artist at left. VERA NEUMANN (1907-1993) was a pioneer of modern design and its interface with business and marketing strategies. The entrepreneur became known worldwide after the middle of the century for her boldly colored linen patterns, scarves and other merchandise. After attending Cooper Union and the Traphagen School of Design, Neumann became a fashion illustrator and textile designer in New York's Seventh Avenue fashion district. Working at first from home, until the fledgling business took off, Neumann by 1960 had already achieved wide recognition, with Marilyn Monroe and Grace Kelly purchasing her famous silk scarves. A ladybug symbol came to be associated with Vera's products. She traveled widely in search of creative inspiration. This poster of 1970 advertised an exhibition of 50 of Neumann's paintings at the Emile Walter Galleries on East 57th Street in New York City. John Lennon is said to have been one of the first customers. The artist wrote in pencil at left "To Gail with Love, Vera". The poster is not mounted but does have some condition issues that come with fifty years of age. There is a foxing mark or two, a disturbed area at upper tip of red portion, (perhaps from old moisture), an area of light hairline abrasions in blue portion, and a few other minor faults. They do not detract meaningfully from the strong Mid-Century statement presented by this poster. Measurements 30" by 23". Can be rolled for economical shipment or sent flat in the metal framing in which it was found (no glass).
