An early 20th century print after the 1885 painting "Das Schweigen im Walde" (The Silence in the Forest) by important Swiss artist and illustrator ARNOLD BOCKLIN (1827-1901). A maiden is mounted on a unicorn in the forest; the strange imagery is somewhat typical of the mythology-inspired, Symbolist works of this artist. Born in Basel he studied between 1845 and 1847 at the Dusseldorf Academy, and subsequently made a study trip to Belgium. By the early 1850's he was in Rome. Study of Old Masters provided the foundation for his mythological themes. This print is in good condition with the exception of a roughly circular brownish discoloration in upper center margin. The early 20th century frame is in good condition. The piece with frame measures 18" by 14 3/4".
