A beautiful watercolor painting featuring a volcanic peak emerging above a cloud deck, as a Central American whitewashed village with tile and thatch roofs fills the foreground, tropical vegetation and two small figures completing the dreamy scene. The work, 14" by 19" inside the present mat opening, is signed at lower right by listed American artist KENNETH E. SIQUEIRA (1922-2009). Siqueira was born in Oakland, California and lived for many years in Berkeley, where he taught music. In his later decades he became an accomplished watercolor painter. His work somewhat resembles that of noted California watercolorists Millard Sheets and Milford Zornes. Siqueira painted a lot in California, especially the northern half, but there are works that include southwestern adobes and, as seen here, international subject matter. On a label adhering to the backing, we learn that this painting is of the village of Santiago, on famed scenic Lake Atitlan, Guatemala. That lake is a major tourist draw, as it offers dramatic tropical scenery, with several conical volcanoes surrounding it---some of them smoking occasionally. The painting is in a metal frame but there is no glass. I would suggest a new fresh mat, but the metal frame can be retained.
