A still life painting of fruit on a table top, executed in the long tradition of hyper-realistic still life painting in the Netherlands, signed at lower right by listed Dutch 20th century artist JAN FREDRIK JOHANNES NAGTEGAAL (1920-2000). This artist is known for his contemporary paintings faithful to the formula of the Dutch masters going back to the 17th century. His still life works, a number of which have appeared at auctions, are known for a high level of detail and realism. Some larger works incorporate ceramic and metal objects in the composition, and a few non-still life paintings by Nagtegaal's hand are known. This example, painting on wood panel, measures 11 1/2" by 15 1/2" and 15 1/4" by 19 1/4" as framed. The surface is a little mottled at left, for want of a better word. A light cleaning would remedy this but a new owner would not have to have this done to just enjoy the painting as it stands.
