A striking modern watercolor and ink drawing signed at lower right in Hebrew by listed Israeli artist HANA LEVI (1914-2002). The work, 19" by 27" (27" by 34 1/2" framed) is elegant, with subdued color palette consisting of black, gray, conservative brown and light green. The artist is listed, and works are offered at auction, many closely resembling this one; though, there seems to be some confusion in the marketplace. Most list her as born 1914 and deceased 2002; some list her birth date as "circa 1920"; some list her as CHANA LEVY (born 1950). There is an online biography that appears to fit, though I cannot confirm that this discusses our artist: "Hannah Levy (b. circa 1920) was born in Germany and arrived in Palestine in 1934. In the 1940s she lived in Moza, near Jerusalem. In 1944 she married the musician and painter Itzhak Levy. She studied painting at the studio of Jacob Steinhardt in Jerusalem and in the 1950s exhibited very expressive landscapes that were full of movement, with slight influences of Chaim Soutine (1893–1943) and Van Gogh (1853–1890). She moved to Safed and changed her style to a restrained, constructive, monochrome painting. Towards the late 1950s an abstract trend appears in her paintings. The Safed paintings from the 1960s are full of energy and tensions. In the 1970s she was one of the founders of the Climate group, with whom she exhibited large abstract landscapes divided into two parts with a chasm between them—aggressive, non-idyllic landscapes that are metaphors for an existential condition in Israel. In the late 1970s she began painting close-ups of faces, with asymmetrical eyes. She lives in a home for seniors in Rehovot.". The present painting is very decorative and could grace your modern or Mid Century setting. Condition is excellent. Allow for reflections in many of the images. The large sheet of glass is very heavy and for safety reasons might be best discarded before shipping.
