A rare woodcut color print of exotic cacti in small pots on a yellow and white cloth, 9 3/8" by 9 3/8" inside the innermost mat, 18 1/4" by 17 1/2" as framed, pencil signed at lower right by the artist, EMMA (EMILIE LEONORE) MEYER (1859-1921). The paper use is an exceedingly delicate tissue-like paper. This is a finely crafted work by an artist from Denmark, who bbviously deserves to be better known. Meyer was a Danish landscape painter, Arts & Crafts artist, etcher and woodblock print maker, and teacher. She studied in Denmark with Harald Foss (1842-1922) and important Danish impressionist Peder Kroger (1837-1909). Meyer exhibited between 1885 and 1922 at the Royal Charlottenborg Castle, and she won a number of awards around the turn of the century. Today she is obscure but recent research shows that in 1908 in Hamburg her work was exhibited alongside those of important artists of the period. This print's colors are vivid and fresh, as if it were printed yesterday. A true prize for anyone who appreciates color woodblock prints and the technical skills needed to produce them.
