A nicely executed impressionist painting of rocks at the Big Sur shoreline in central California, titled on reverse "BOULDERS ON THE BAY/DOUD RANCH/BIG SUR 1939". The unsigned work on canvasboard measures 20" by 24" (24" by 28" framed). No doubt, the artist was talented and likely would be listed, had he/she signed the work. A light cleaning would likely brighten this up, and at lower left corner there is some fine pattern paint flaking, probably related to old moisture exposure, evidence of which remains on the reverse side. The frame is of the period and likely the original frame. Paintings of the Big Sur region are always popular as the beautiful and dramatic scenery of the central California coast has long drawn visitors from the United States and abroad.
