A pretty circa 1950 still life on Masonite board, 18" by 24" (26 1/2" by 32 1/2" framed), the subject given on the reverse as "Red Camellia Bouquet", signed at lower right and again on the reverse by German-born artist JOHN WILLIAM ORTH (1889-1976). Orth was born in Bavaria and studied art in Europe before fleeing for the United States in 1923 for political reasons. For a time he was in Texas and later painted in California, and he is today most associated with those states. Orth painted a wide range of subject matter---portraits, landscapes, nudes, and still life. This work could benefit from a little restoration work---a cleaning to remove general soiling, building up of the extreme lower left corner which is a bit worn, and there are some lightly scuffed and scraped areas that could use attention. The issues are not serious but the painting does need attention. The frame is of a dated type, as well; a new silvery frame would really complete the transformation. The painting is a diamond in the rough.
