An elegantly understated print featuring somewhat Hopperesque houses framed by trees, the imagery generally appearing as monochromatic and grayish, with some light green and pinkish color, signed in pencil at lower right corner and numbered 76/90 at lower left, by the noted American contemporary artist ROBERT KIPNISS (1931-). Kipniss is known for his graphic art and for his paintings, which have gone into five figures at auction. He was born in Brooklyn and was taking art classes at the Art Students League as early as 1947. In the late forties he studied at Wittenberg University and eventually was at the University of Iowa. The askart description of the artist: "....monochromatic stylized vistas with natural and architectural elements intended to evoke an elegiac nearly surrealistic mood in haunting, silent landscapes....". Kipniss' prints are highly sought after by collectors of fine prints. He was technically very skilled; works include mezzotint (after about 1990) and intaglio processes. There is a catalogue raisonne of the graphic works. This example is clean and fresh, with double mat and dark greenish frame (slight wear on the frame). It measures 13 1/2" by 11 1/2" inside the innermost mat and 23" by 21" framed. One of two by the artist in my shop. See an excellent and complete biography of the artist on Wikipedia.
