A fine, interesting mixed media (watercolor/white gouache) drawing, 10 1/4" by 12 1/2", (13 3/4" by 16 3/4" framed) titled on reverse "Old House and Horse", signed in pencil lower right by well-known, well listed American artist JOHN GRABACH (1886-1981). An old framer's label from Newark, NJ remains on the backing. Grabach grew up in Newark, New Jersey, progressing over the years with his art until he came to be a leader of the Newark School. Early in life he worked in silverware and glass design. Study at the Art Students League in New York developed his art skills, and by the 1920's he was producing advanced impressionist and Ashcan style oil paintings. George Bellows was a contemporary, and some of Grabach's paintings resemble those of Bellows. Grabach painted a broad range of subject matter and worked in a number of media. He painted on Cape Ann, in New York City, in the New Hope area, and even in California, for a time. For many years he was a teacher and the Newark School of Industrial Design. Henry Gasser was a student. In 1980 the Smithsonian accorded him the honor of a solo exposition, rare for a living painter. Grabach's paintings have approached $50,000 at auctions. His works are not commonly encountered. The artist has poetically transformed the mundane subject of an old house in a changing neighborhood into a true work of art. Allow for reflections in a few images.
