An unusual-for-the-artist abstract, painted with palette knife, in oil on Masonite, titled on reverse "Depth" by the noted artist, illustrator and art instructor EARL DANIELS (1920-1999). Generally the artist has been known for his landscapes and seascapes of the Southern California coast, but other subject matter, perhaps experimental as may be the case here, is known. Daniels was born in New York City and was a commercial artist and jazz musician before settling in Laguna Beach in Southern California in the early 1940's. He came to be a well known member of the active Laguna Beach art community, and his fame spread nationally after he published a number of instructional books on painting technique. In 1963 President and Mrs. Kennedy commissioned him to produce a painting. Towards the end of his life, Daniels moved to the Big Island of Hawaii to live with relatives, passing on in Kailua-Kona in 1999. He left behind quality works featuring the scenic deserts and coast of California. This example measures 12" by 16" (18 1/2" by 22" framed and is signed at lower left (incised in the wet paint). The painting is clean; the frame has slight wear.
