By the hand of the noted and much sought after Mexican folk art painter AGAPITO LABIOS (1898-1996), a charming oil on canvas of a young girl in traditional dress positioned on a balcony or patio, an expansive view of Mexico City's famed central square, the Zocalo, occupying the top half of the composition. Details in that portion include the architectural details, figures, and even a horse-drawn cart. This is an unframed painting, 23 1/2" by 18 1/4", signed at lower left in red with the typical signature. Labios was a self-taught artist who painted in a naive style similar to that of the very well known painter Horacio (paintings of the latter artist sell into the five figures at major auctions of Latin American art). Labios frequently painted children in landscapes and interiors, with attention always lavished on the details. The painting is in essentially good condition, with light soiling, inconsistent varnish, and notable stretcher bar show-through especially at right---all perfectly acceptable in a vintage folk art work. Labios' works have increased in price in recent years as collectors have noticed their primitive charm and folk art appeal. This example is an especially interesting painting compared to many on the market. See a second work by the artist in my shop. E
