More from Jon Berg Fine Arts and More
By the hand of the noted and much sought-after Mexican folk art painter AGAPITO LABIOS (1898-1996), a charming oil on canvas of household objects on shelves, unframed, 22" by 16 1/2", signed at lower right in red with the typical signature. Labios was a self-taught artist who painted in a naive style similar to that of the very well known painter Horacio (paintings of the latter artist sell into the five figures at major auctions of Latin American art). Labios frequently painted children in landscapes and interiors (with a focus on kitchens, interestingly), with careful attention always lavished on the details. The painting is in essentially very presentable condition, with light pressure dimple/scratch at right center, but neither punctures nor tears; the canvas is not perfectly flat, varnish is inconsistent and there is stretcher bar show-through. The frame shows some wear. Labios' works have increased in price in recent years as collectors have noticed their primitive charm and folk art appeal. This would be a fine complement to your kitchen or pantry. See a second work by the artist in my shop. E
