A 9 1/8" by 6 7/8" crayon on paper drawing, (24 1/2" by 20 3/4" as presently framed), signed at lower left in pencil "M. Hoff" and on the backing is written apparently in artist's handwriting "MARGO HOFF/THREE ROOFS/CRAYON DRAWING". Margo Hoff was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1910. By 1934 she was in Chicago where she received training at the Art Institute. Before the war she was able to travel extensively in Europe. During the 1940's, Mexican art exerted its influence on her, as it did with many other artists between the big wars. The mid fifties was a major decade for Hoff, with an exposition of her works at the Fairweather-Hardin Gallery, which went on to represent her for many years. Another showing of her works was held at the prestigious Wildenstein Gallery in Paris, making her an internationally recognized artist at that point. In 1960 she settled in New York, feeling very comfortable there and forging relationships with artists and galleries, including the major Betty Parsons Gallery. Throughout her life she traveled extensively internationally, often to remote parts of the earth, drawing from her experiences to enrich her art; she taught in Uganda, Beirut, China, Ethiopia and the Brazilian Amazon. Indeed she seems to have been a fearless traveler and explorer who savored the experiences of these voyages. Today Hoff's works are included in major museum collections worldwide. At major auctions in Chicago, her oils have sold to as high as $22,000. See Hoff's fascinating biography online. Condition: the work is attached at top edge to the card backing. Condition of the drawing itself appears to be excellent (just doesn't lay perfectly flat as there has been some storage at some time perhaps in a damp place---backing board has foxing, including in the margins as presented; you could mat this out but should obviously retain the original backing due to the writing on it). The gold frame is 19th century style and apparently was just married to the drawing. It does make for an interesting and creative combination.
